13 Dec Local, Award-Winning Artist Collaborates with the Indianapolis School of Ballet to Create Limited-time, Exclusive Art for The Nutcracker
INDIANAPOLIS, November 28, 2016 – Indianapolis’ own award-winning illustrator and fine artist, April Willy, has teamed up with the Indianapolis School of Ballet to create an exclusive painting to be auctioned off at the VIP Nutcracker Reception on Friday, December 16. The painting of the Nutcracker portrays the mysterious duality of his character in one image. The illustration, signed by the artist, is stylized in a retro, yet modern technique and is valued at $3,000.
The one-of-a-kind painting was donated by Mrs. Willy to be used for promotion of the highly anticipated 10th Anniversary production of The Nutcracker with music performed by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Funds raised from the auction will be used towards the school and scholarships.
“We are very grateful that April wanted to help celebrate our big anniversary by designing an exclusive painting that incorporates her beautiful style into our vision of The Nutcracker,” said Victoria Lyras, Founding Artistic Director. “This is already a special year for our Nutcracker, with the addition of April’s generous and unique gift, this production encompasses the collaboration of live music, dance, and visual art.”
“I was honored to do the painting based on the concept Three-Sixty Group created to help the ISB celebrate its tenth year. What a fun and satisfying challenge,” said April Willy.
April Willy has spent more than 20 years working for local and national agencies as an advertising and editorial illustrator before she became a full-time artist. She now divides her time equally between illustration and fine art. Ms. Willy has completed eight children’s books, participated in over 40 juried art competitions and exhibitions, and has won numerous local and national awards.
April’s studio resides on the third floor of the historic Stutz building in downtown Indianapolis where she has also invited ISB to participate in the Stutz Holiday Open House that takes place on Friday, December 2 from 5:00 to 10:00p.m. ISB will have a table set up with more information regarding the upcoming Nutcracker performance as well as dancers parading through the halls to meet guests and perform brief dances.
Indianapolis School of Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker is a timeless two-act ballet featuring choreography by Victoria Lyras (ISB’s founding Artistic Director and former principal dancer and soloist with the Pennsylvania Ballet and a Balanchine protégé), Robert Rodham (former Regisseur of the Pennsylvania Ballet), and George Balanchine (founder of the School of American Ballet and the New York City Ballet). Lyras is staging Mr. Balanchine’s famous Grand Pas de Deux© from Act II of The Nutcracker with permission from The George Balanchine Trust.
For the first time in its history, ISB will perform with the world-renowned Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO). The ISO will feature an ensemble of 45 musicians, led by ISO assistant conductor Vince Lee who has premiered more than 200 works to date. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com, or by visiting the box office in the Old National Centre on 502 N. New Jersey St., Indianapolis, IN.
