Capital campaign underway to launch professional ballet company for Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (May 24, 2017) – Indianapolis Ballet, Inc., announced on May 21 at its annual Gala the launch of the Moving Forward Capital Campaign towards the establishment of a professional ballet company for Indianapolis.  The goal of the capital campaign is to raise $1.2 million by the end of 2017.

Moving ForwardThe professional company will be named Indianapolis Ballet and debut at the Toby Theatre at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) in early 2018.  “The financial stability that has been demonstrated over these past 11 years at the Indianapolis School of Ballet presents a clear picture for the viability and long-term success of the professional ballet company,” states Michael O’Brien, Board President.  The Indianapolis School of Ballet has been recognized as the premier destination for classical ballet training, main-stage performances and community outreach in Indianapolis since its founding in 2006.

In August of 2016, the Board of Directors finalized a comprehensive Business Plan for the creation of a professional company in Indianapolis.  The Business Plan defines the Indianapolis Ballet season to consist of main-stage productions by the professional company members with additional dancers from the School’s professional track.  The financial strategy for the Indianapolis Ballet will leverage shared resources from School faculty, facility and staff.

Victoria Lyras, founding Artistic Director, notes, “Since the School’s inception in 2006, the vision for Indianapolis Ballet, Inc. has always been to launch a professional ballet company built on the solid foundation of a successful school.   We are unique in our commitment to the George Balanchine legacy and to Indianapolis.”  Lyras adds, “The professional company’s dancers, staff and board members will continue to be part of the Central Indiana community and engage with the public to provide ‘diversity of access’ to classical ballet.”

The Indianapolis Ballet debut season is scheduled to launch in early 2018 with two weeklong residencies confirmed at the Toby Theatre at the IMA.  Auditions will be open to elite-level dancers from across the country.  Dates and locations for company auditions will be announced in June 2017 and posted at www.indyballet.org.

“Through the generosity and support of the Barbara and Karl R. Zimmer, Jr. Family Foundation and members of our board we have already reached $300,000 in funds and pledges towards our goal,” shares Susan Moritz, Interim Director of Development.
